Trekking in Bhutan
Best Season: Spring & Autumn

Bhutan is one of  best places for true Trekking lovers. A trekker must be mentally prepared and physically fit to face the unexpected expeditions and abrupt changes in elevation. Treks can be long or short with daily 07-19 kilometers walk to reach the campsites. Bhutan has identified number of trekking routes that render opportunity to experience the cultural, incredible scenic beauty, Entire Himalaya’s ranges, yak herders, flora and fauna. It isoften most challenging yet  an enriching experience always.

Treks cost Include:

Government Licensed Trekking Guides, trained to deal with Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), trekking cook, assistants, horsemen, three times meals, mattresses (we can provide on minimum charges per day), two men sleeping tents, dining tents, kitchen tents, toilet tents and utensils. The heavier stuff will be carried by horses or yaks but  you need to carry your camera, water bottle and your side bag on the trek. Campsite will be always designated at a place where there is water supply to cook  meals and meadows to feed the ponies.

Need to Bring For Treks:

Sleeping bags, water proof trekking bag, Strong comfortable trekking shoes,pants, Socks (woolen), cotton T-shirts, Woolen hat, Waterproof jacket, Umbrella, Water bottle, Torch (flashlight, batteries), Pocket knife (be sure this is packed in your checked baggage to avoid hassles with airport security), Sun block (SPF upto 50-plus), Towel, Laundry soap, Slippers, Insect repellents, Medicine , Water purifier tablets. Carry  Extra warm cloths, as may need tochange and wash them. There is no trekking store here in Bhutan to buy or rent one and we suggest you to buy this from your place. The trekking cost does not include your insurance.

Paro -Taktshang Lhakhang (Tiger's Nest)


  • Distance: 2 hours one way.

  • Altitude: 3,120 meter above sea level.

  • Elevation gain: 900 meters above Paro valley.

  • Difficulty: Moderate.

  • It was first built in 1692 at a cave where Guru Rimpoche meditated in the 7th century A.D. Legend states that Guru Rimpoche flew to the site atop the back of a tigress and meditated in the cave for 3 years, 3 months, 3 days and 3 hours in order to subdue evil demons residing within it. The cave has been considered a sacred site ever since and many famous saints have travelled to meditate in it.Taktsang Lhakhang is located approximately 10 km north of Paro town at an altitude of 3.120 meters. In order to arrive at the temple visitors must trek for around 2-3 hours through beautiful,shady pine forests. No trip to Bhutan would be complete without a visit to this remarkable heritage site.

Day Hikes and Walks in Bhutan
Kila Goenpa

  • Distance: 3.5 hours.
  • Altitude: 600 meters above sea level.
  • Elevation gain:
  • Difficulty: Medium.

It is the serene home of Buddhist nuns who have dedicated their life for spiritual fulfilment and leading undisturbed life of religious studies, prayer and meditation. The Goemba is nestled in a craggy patch on mountain side below the Chelela pass and perched precariously along the rock face. From Chelela pass, the lhakhang is about an hour walk amidst magnificent wooded area.

Dzongdrakha Lhakhang

This temple is located between Paro and Haa valley. This is very short hike and after visiting the Lhakhangs, drives to Chelela pass. Often called the mini- Taktsang, Dzongdrakha temples are built on the cliffs above Bondey village. The walk there is not as strenuous as to Taktsang. Legend says one of the temples is built around a levitating monument. Folks built a stronger temple around this monument with the hope that the levitating monument does not fly away into the sky.

Thimphu Tango & Cheri Goenpa


  • Distance:1 hours approximately for each.
  • Altitude: 2800 meters above sea level.
  • Elevation gain:400meters
  • Difficulty: Medium.

Drive by the car to Doedena, from here walk up to the Tango Monastery. You will also take pack lunch. The hike will take about 1hour 30minutes.Visit the monastery and walk back. We will take our lunch near the Doedena Bridge. After lunch we will hike to Cheri, which will take about 1hour up steep.

Dzongdrakha Lhakhang
Phajoding Goenpa

  • Distance:4 hours approximately for each.
  • Altitude: 3500 meters above sea level.
  • Elevation gain:1000 meters
  • Difficulty: Medium.

Phajoding is located on the hill overlooking the entire Thimphu Valley. There are many monasteries in Phajoding. The hike will take about 3hours 30 minutes, steep climb. We have to start this hike early in the morning from Thimphu with pack lunch. The hike is through the forest of chirpine and rhododendron.

Wangditshe Nature Trail


  • Distance:2 hours approximately for each.
  • Altitude: 2400 meters above sea level.
  • Elevation gain:60 Meters
  • Difficulty: Easy.

This hike can start from Dechenphodrang. It is steep climb till the Lhakhang. From the Lhakhang, it is just a plain walk. From this hike we can see the entire Thimphu Valley, beautifully.


Punakha & Wangdue Phodrang


  • Distance:1 hours approximately for each.
  • Altitude: 1500 meters above sea level.
  • Elevation gain:200 meters
  • Difficulty: Easy.

This hike is through the farmer’s field and then through the pine forest. The hike is about 1 hour up steep climb, and visit the Khamsum Yule Namgyel Chorten, which is a temple inside. The temple inside will give the visitors, the good examples of tantric Buddhist and its philosophy. On your way back, you can take through the fields of Kabesa Village.


Gangtey Natural Trail (Gangtey)


  • Distance:2 hours approximately for each.
  • Altitude: 2700 meters above sea level.
  • Elevation gain:200meters
  • Difficulty: Easy.

The most beautiful and shortest of the existing nature trails in Bhutan. The trail hike starts from the mani (like Chhorten) stone wall to the north of the GangteyGompa and ends in Khewa Lhakhang. The hike takes about 1hr 30minutes through the pine forest and small bamboo plants. You can see thePhobjkha valley so beautifully from this hike. It is one of the best hike places for the Nature lovers.During the winter months, we can see the endangered species of birds Black Neck Cranes..


Chhimi Lhakhang Hike (Wangdiphodrang)


  • Distance:30 Mins approximately for each.
  • Altitude: 1500 meters above sea level.
  • Elevation gain:20 meters
  • Difficulty: Easy.

Chhimi Lhakhang, which is also known as the 'temple of fertility', is located at a hilltop. We have to hike about 30mitues across the farm fields through the village of Sopspkha. Ngawang Chogyel brother of Drukpa Kuenley (divine Madman) built the temple in 15th century after his brother Drukpa Kuenlay built a small chorten there. You will get fertility blessings especially for the childless women from this temple.

Phajoding Goenpa
Lampleri Botanical Garden

  • Distance:45 minutes approximately.
  • Altitude: 2100 meters to 3750 meters
  • Difficulty: Easy.

Lampari Botanical Garden is located between Dochula pass and Wangdiphodrang. It is about 30km from Thimphu towards Wangdiphodrang. A Rhododendron garden with 46 species of the plant is one of the themes of a 125-acre botanical garden in Lamperi. From the 46 species, around 28 species can be seen here. We can walk around the Baritsho Lake, a canteen, viewpoints and camping space for visitors. The Lamperi area was declared a botanical park because of its rich ecosystem diversity. It has cool broad leaf forests, mixed conifer forests, fir and sub-alpine forests and the temperate rain forest with hundreds of species of fauna.
